OUR STORY
In July 1977, Dr. John Bailes, along with Dr. Pat Creed saw the need for an Independent Baptist Church in Waldorf, Maryland. After much prayer and counsel, Dr. Bailes began what was then called Faith Baptist Church which met in a rented building in Waldorf. Under his leadership, the church grew to around 200 in attendance. However, in 1980, Dr. Bailes felt the Lord calling him to focus on church planting and he resigned as Pastor to pursue God’s calling on his life.
The church called Norris Ward as Pastor. The church had just purchased twenty acres of land on Route 301 between Waldorf and La Plata. Pastor Ward led the church to build on that property. Under his pastorate, the church grew and averaged in the 400’s with highs close to 500. Unfortunately some folks left and the attendance dwindled to around 100.
At that time, the church called Pat Creed Jr. as Pastor with the hope of reviving the ministry. In 1990, Faith Baptist Church changed its name to Calvary Baptist Church.
In 1992, with about 30 members, the church called Lucky Dixon as Pastor. Within a year, the church doubled in attendance. In January 1994, the church purchased its current property on Old Washington Road in Waldorf. In the next couple of years, there was an increase in attendance with a high of about 175. In 2003, Calvary Baptist Church changed its name to Cross County Baptist Church and averaged an attendance of around 125. On October 12th of 2008 Pastor Dixon resigned his pastorate.
On January 12, 2009, Cross County Baptist Church called George Dickens as Pastor. Pastor George, as we call him, came to Cross County in 2002 serving as Brother Dixon’s assistant. In 2006 he and his wife Pat went to China returning in 2007 to Cross County Baptist Church. After Brother Dixon’s resignation, Pastor George served as Interim Pastor until his call as Pastor.
As of September 25, 2022 Pastor George Dickens and his wife Pat retired. We are now searching for the man God wants in our church to be our pastor.
